Ingela – Image of You

Swedish composer and singer Ingela is releasing her second album Image of You shortly. I took the album cover photo and Cecilia Sörbom Österholm did the album layout.

Ingela’s first album, All These Choices, was released in 2009. Ingela is inspired by Brazilian and African rhythms yet her music bares a Nordic melancholic sound.

I went to the opening of Unique Hair by Johanna yesterday. Johanna has worked at L’Oréal Sweden for many years and is still one of their top stylists and continuously train other color technicians.

We have worked together on many projects and she is amazing with color. This is her first own salon.

Anita was no exception. She’s an International Latin Ballroom dancer and walked into the studio with a smile and effortlessly kept on dancing, from intensive jive to emotional paso doble.

A dear friend was diagnosed with skin cancer (malignant melanoma) in September. Anyone who has been through that knows how difficult it is, to just helplessly stand beside.

I took up life drawing again and it has become one of my favourite moments of the week, to spend a few hours in complete silence, drawing.

It has been a rough year but there are also a lot to be thankful of. The surgeons managed to rid of all the cancer and I’m so grateful.

I was recently asked to participate in a group exhibition in Stockholm. I’ve had a couple of drawings published in Australian Sketch Magazine, but I’ve never exhibited any drawings before so this is all new to me.

Life is strange sometimes.

2011 Recap

2011 is coming to an end and it’s time to sum things up.

I photographed Swedish singer-songwriter Jörgen Kjellgren in the beginning of the year while the snow still was on the ground. The album cover image is taken while Kjellgren walks across the frozen river.

Sony signed Kjellgren after releasing St Judas, and he gave me confidence to make the video to Utan Titel.

I met Lutfi Othman in Spartacus League’s rehearsal studio in the suburbs of Melbourne back in 2008 and at the time he was leadsinger in the band. I was there with a photographer friend to make a video. We took some still photos to cut into the video, but mostly we were filming and I think we all had a great time.

Lutfi just released some new material on his own. It is a softer smokier sound, all instrumental.

I’m waking up by the sea to the sounds of seagulls, going for long walks along the ocean, reading book after book after book after book, relaxing in the jacuzzi, having barbeques with friends and not doing much at all to be honest.

It’s a beautiful sunny morning and I’m sitting at the garden drinking a strawberry smoothie waiting for my nephews to wake up, when they do we are going the stable and their riding classes.

It’s the last days of vacation before heading back into the city.

I photographed up and coming actress Juliette Reiss when I was in LA. Juliette has mostly worked on various theatre productions, but also on film sets and she is regular in the background on How I Met Your Mother and was recently on Mad Men as well as True Blood.

We went for a walk in Los Feliz; it was close to sunset and it is all ambient light. She’s so beautiful and such a delight to work with.

It was a cold winter day when Swedish singer-songwriter Jörgen Kjellgren came to the studio. After the studio shoot, we walked to the river. The water was frozen and people were taking shortcuts over the water, creating muddy tracks between the islands.

Jörgen jumped from a low boat bridge and we got some shots, one of them is the album cover (top right) to his new album St Judas. It will be released 25th May, but here is a preview of the track Vintern (winter). And of course, some photos.

Australian singer-songwriter Ben Abraham wrote American singer Sara Bareilles a song, asking her to sing with him. Last week they performed together at Rod Laver Arena in front of 15 000 people.

The image is from a photo shoot I did with Ben in CBD last month; I will post more photos from that shoot in a couple of days.

I am in Melbourne for work and was lucky enough to be flown over. I did some shopping along Brunswick Street yesterday.

I photographed brother sister duo behind the fashion label Alpha 60 last year and the photo was used in a special edition for Sportsgirl Australia. Alpha 60 has a temporary sale store at Brunswick Street (final week) and I saw one of the pieces from the Sportsgirl collection. My photo was printed on the tag.

I had already moved back (my visa expired) to Sweden when the collection was in store, so it was actually the first time I saw it in print. To pick up a designer dress and see your photo… you kind of just want to do happy dance. It did put a smile on my face.

It was a sunny day when I met singer-songwriter Jörgen Kjellgren in the studio. The studio is situated close to the river, so we there to get some location shots as well.

The winter has been cold in Stockholm and across the river there are tracks from people continuously taking short cuts crossing the rivers by foot. So we got some shots of him walking on the frozen river.

Not the photo below though, and it’s just a sneak peak of one of the images to his upcoming album. Release date end of next month.

The video, Han har gjort det igen, is a lovely track from the previous album. Looking forward to the new one!

Organic Botanic

Carl-Johan Paulin, one of the photographers I’m sharing studio space with, had a gallery opening last night at Berns, Stockholm.

The show Organic Botanic includes photographs of fruits and flowers. The fruits are hand painted by artist Martin Bergström and photographed by Paulin. The exhibition will be on at Berns Asiatiska 10 March – 10 May.

I was quite serious about dancing when I was younger and pretty much lived in the studio. I still do in a way, but in the photo studio instead.

Sometimes you can combine the two. I spent three weeks following a contemporary dancer in Melbourne on a project in photojournalism. I had so much fun.

The new series is photographed in Stockholm. The dancer, Sara, is currently doing her final semester at the Royal Swedish Ballet School, already rehearsing the Swan Lake with the Royal Swedish Ballet.

I met Andreas at a fashion event in Stockholm, the venue was crowded, the music loud and it was late at night. Andreas was wearing a v-neck shirt, his tattoo showing and assumed he was a model. We did a quick test shoot.

I was working on the images when a new photo assistant came into the studio. He looked at my screen and said, “you’re doing vampire photos!”

It made me laugh, because vampires weren’t what I had in mind when I shot it, at all. But I did read the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris a couple of weeks ago and there are obviously a few vampires around.

My friend Liam McIntyre will be replacing Andy Whitfield in Spartacus – Blood and Sand. Liam has previously starred in HBO’s The Pacific as well as Australian TV-series Rush and Neighbours.

The production on the second season of Spartacus is planned to resume in the spring of 2011 and will premiere in 2012.

He will be great as Spartacus and he obviously takes his roles seriously, lost 15 kilos for a film role. And well, this is his outfit at a Halloween party we went to in Melbourne last year.

I have moved my wedding stuff to a separate site (www.anneviweddings.com). Slightly different crowd, slightly different style, so it made sense.

On this site, I will keep posting my fashion shoots, portraits and all personal work. There are some new images in the galleries and of course a new blog layout.

I’m kind of excited; I hope you will be too.

Time to sum things up, although it’s not a wrap quite yet.

After four years in Australia my visa expired so I moved from Australian summer to Swedish winter. Australia is fairly remote to… most places. So I did some travelling.

I had an exhibition in Los Angeles and met up with photography friends and had an amazing time there, then head over to New York for a couple of weeks.

I photographed singer songwriter Dear Euphoria and the photos were published in the book Vägen till Sångerna by Stefan Warnqvist. Dear Euphoria and I also worked together on another project. Her voice and my images in a video that was screened at Slideluck Stockholm.

Biggest gig of the year was with fashion designers Alpha 60, for Sportsgirl Australia. It was printed on postcards and in stores all over Australia.

Had some photos in Australian Sketch Magazine. Got a silver award at the Australian Professional Photography Awards 2010. I won three bronze awards at the International Aperture Awards 2010, in three different categories, people, wedding and illustrative.

Lights

Sometimes you ask me about lighting so I thought I would share some photos.

(1) Two heads lighting the background, bouncing into the polyboards, mostly to avoid camera flare.

(2) The main light is a Beauty Dish with reflector and the second light is a Balloon. A beauty dish is probably my favourite light source, besides ambient, when it comes to portraits. It gives a beautiful fall off, eg. this shot (top one). The balloon is completely underrated but gives an amazingly soft light. I use it a lot for beauty shots.

The combination of a beauty dish and a balloon isn’t typical I guess, but I find using just a beauty dish will be too harsh for a fashion shoot. Big soft boxes are easy and reliable, but can give a too flat light. It depends on what you shoot of course.

Estelle and I used to live at the same street in Melbourne. We live only a couple of blocks apart in Stockholm.

She has modelled professional for years and had worked with photographers and make up artists I knew. But we had never met until she followed love and moved to Sweden.

Of course we had to do a shoot together when we found out. It was so much fun and she is a natural in front of the camera.

International Aperture Awards 2010

I entered three prints in the International Aperture Awards 2010. One in people category, one in wedding and one in Illustrative.

Wedding (first photo)

I kind of new that the wedding shot would work. It scored a bronze award, only a point under silver award, so maybe a tiny bit disappointed.

People (second photo)

Judges always like crisp photos and most of this image is not (effect), although the subject is. I wasn’t surprised that it didn’t get as high scores, but still a bronze award.

Illustrative (third photo)

I have been very close, but never got any awards in Illustrative before. The competition is usually murderous in that category. The print I entered is probably one of the strangest images I have ever done. I haven’t even posted it here, because I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not. I honestly had no idea how it would be received in a competition; it’s probably an image you like or dislike. I got a bronze award and the same score as the wedding image, one point below silver.

Liam McIntyre is one of three actors vying for the lead role in Spartacus. Of course I hope he will get it.

Vägen till sångerna (the road to the songs) is an anthology with interviews of contemporary Swedish singer-songwriters written by Stefan Warnqvist. A discussion about their work, influences and creative process are brought together into a book including discographies and photos.

Dungen, Taken by Trees, Timo Räisänen, Elin Sigvardsson and Dear Euphoria are a few of the musicians that are interviewed. Some of my photos of Elina Johansson aka Dear Euphoria are published in the book.

Vägen till sångerna will be published in Sweden in September 2010. Hopefully it will be translated sometime soon.

Alpha 60 recently designed a collection for the major Australian fashion brand Sportsgirl. You might have seen it in stores, on posters or at postcards.

The annual Australian Professional Photography Awards, APPA, was held in Melbourne last weekend and it’s always nice to attend the event and catch up with other photographers. Unfortunately I missed out this year being overseas.

It has been a busy few months moving to Europe, to get the entire logistics happening as well as shooting and travelling.

The model is Jessie Habermann, an Australian model on the rise. Photographed in Melbourne last year.

Slideluck Stockholm

There is a Slideluck Screening in Stockholm tonight at Delight Studios. Slideluck is a New York City based organization founded in 2000 by advertising photographer Casey Kelbaugh.

I have work in the Stockholm show, an underwater series accompanied with music by Elina Johansson. Admission fee 100sek and there will be food, treats, drinks and afterparty.

were all I had in Los Angeles. I also had a gallery opening, a wedding to attend and photograph, a bbq at Manhattan Beach and a little wishlist of things to see and do.

I was in NYC for another 10 days so I have heaps of photos to edit and I’m leaving for Greece in a couple of days. But, here are some photos of the lovely places I went to in LA.

I arrived late in the evening and spent the first night at LAX. When I got to the hotel, they had accedently cancelled my prepaid reservation. I got upgraded to a suite.

Saw a photo exhibition at the Getty Centre. It was a beautiful day and it was so nice to sit outside by the fountain in the shadow of the trees and have a salad. Show must go on.

A photographer asked me if I liked to come along to the Watts Towers. “Sure”, I said, not really knowing anything about it.

We stopped at a car park and she asked me to grab my photo gear as “we can’t open the trunk when we arrive in Watts”. I had no idea we were going into the ghetto.

Contrasts. Stayed at the W in Hollywood, just opened and a gorgeous place to stay.

Dear Euphoria, aka Elina Johansson is releasing their new EP very soon and we took some press release photos.

I love the soft eerie sound of Dear Euphoria and liked to reflect that in the images.

We had planned an outdoor shoot, but the rain started to pour down when we got to the location so we quickly had to change plans. And Elina walked through the underground all flowery; she looked like a fairy escaped from a saga in the grey concrete around us.

I grew up in the south of Sweden and although it easily gets -10 degrees in winter, it normally doesn’t snow much. Most of the time it is mostly wet and muddy in winter.

This year it has been exceptionally cold and something has happened that I have only seen twice. The sea has frozen.

It’s my last night in Melbourne. I have lived here since 2006 but my visa expires and I have to go.

I have finished packing and the apartment feels empty and silent. Looking out over the city and I’m feeling a bit sad. I love this place.

It’s a 26 hours flight in the morning to Europe, 10 hours shorter than last time so I’m lucky.

I look forward seeing family and friends in Sweden; it is more than a year since I saw them last time. Can’t wait really, but now, right now, I feel mainly sadness of leaving a place that feels like home.

This is home, but it’s time to build a new somewhere else.

Time to sum things up and it has been a busy year. It was my final year at the photographic course at RMIT and it was very intense. It was also a lot of fun and I met so many new lovely people this year, stylists, hair-stylists, photographers, make-up artists, artists and models.

I had my first show of the year in July and exhibited an underwater series – Let It Fall that I photographed back in Sweden last Christmas. It didn’t quite make it to the final in Projections, but was given a highly commended in the art category.

The second show, the graduation show at Eckersley’s Gallery in November was intended to be the last show, but then there was Hogan Gallery this month. It was kind of unexpected but I was happy to be a finalist in portrait in Edge Photo Imaging Awards.

I specialized in portraiture in my graduation folio, but it was partly due to the limited timeline and studio access. I would have liked to photograph more fashion, but there is always next year. I prefer to work with people so fashion and portraiture are two areas I like a lot.

I have also been hanging out at various comedy scenes and it’s impossible not having fun when photographing stand-up comedians. And occasionally you get called up on stage. Don’t have a picture of that though.

In June I went up to Sydney and the APPA Awards. It is the highlight of photographic events of the year and AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) arranged seminars, cocktail parties and award dinners. It was so much fun and I was very happy for my 2 silvers in portraiture.

I look forward to 2010 and there will be a lot of changes in my life next year. Enjoy the last hours of 2009 and see you in 2010. Happy New Year!

Finalist in the edge

I was just told that I am a finalist in the Edge Photo Imaging Excellence Awards 2009.

It is a portrait of stand up comedian Magesh, also well-known Australian drummer.

The images will be on display and the category winners will be announced tomorrow at the awards night (Tuesday 15 Dec), at The Hogan Gallery, 310 Smith Street, Collingwood. The function starts at 7 pm.

Alpha 60

You have certain fashion stores you just love and Alpha 60 is one of them, with shops in Sydney and Melbourne. I had a portrait assignment at RMIT and contacted the Melbourne based design duo Georgie and Alex Cleary at Alpha 60.

I went to the design studio with my assistant to do a location portrait and we started to set up lights. Alex grabbed a shirt from one of the many hangers in the studio and came back a couple of minutes later with the new shirt on. I wish I could do the same.

Gallery review – let it fall

An art student at the university contacted me and asked if he could interview me. He, Mitchell, needed to write a review of an exhibited set of works currently on and he told me that he liked to write about mine. And he did:

What is the purpose of photography? Are photographs merely two dimensional reference materials from which we identify people, objects and places of the past – tools that tell us details of our world indifferent to human sentimentality? Or do they posses within themselves individual interpretations? Can they offer us more? Can they disarm our sensory control and ignite within us feelings that challenge our rational thought and grant us the kind of experiences often submerged under the silence of dreaming?

These are some of the questions that you may find yourself thinking after viewing Melbourne based Photographer Annevi Petersson’s series Let it Fall, currently on exhibition at The Brunswick Street Gallery.

The twelve photos are hypnotic, involving the expressions of movement detained underwater, elegantly captured using only muted blue colours. They are haunting and dramatic without being overdone and mysterious in the way each shot has been captured without being overbearing. They are all simply numbered and are hung in a grid formation rather than side by side, which surprisingly works well without making them seem too cluttered. Although this is the case, sadly the space given to this series isn’t near enough; each individual image could easily command an entire wall, more likely giving the viewer an even better appreciation of each.

Photographs like 8 and 12 cleverly use illusion which completely de-rails the viewer’s sense of distinction between underwater and the surface. Annevi has also very effectively hidden the features of the face so as not to distract from the complete composition, where in some, the difference between the reflection and the actual body become less identifiable. The narrative by Annevi, written on the plaque next to the photographs is simple yet powerful, acting almost as a meditation, guiding the senses to fully absorb the almost overwhelming experience silently pulsating within each photograph.

Annevi’s ideas and technique with this type of photography is certainly unique and while there are no obvious influences for the Let it Fall series, some links may be seen in the underwater work of contemporary artists like Narelle Autio and Trent Parke. Annevi said she was interested in the dying Ophelia mythology, with the Let it Fall series exploring instead the idea of Ophelia fighting and choosing to live. While some may see the photographs as being too dark, Annevi sees them as being the complete opposite saying the series is a journey “from the darkness, stillness and despair, to the fight, attitude and courage to live and also the joy of life”.

Annevi has said of her work that she doesn’t “like to tell what the reader or audience is suppose to feel; I think that is very much to insult the reader. What I hope to do is to create a mood, a feeling that stays with them that they can reflect upon.” This is a real strength, especially for works like Let it Fall, because you do not necessarily need to understand the metaphoric, mythical or even existential overtones in order to enjoy the simple beauty of each photograph. Good advice would be to first read the narrative, then allow yourself to be absorbed by the pictures, to feel weightless with them and in that moment, leave the world behind.
