WALKING STILLNESS

I was invited to photograph and exhibit at beautiful Kjugekull National Park in southern Sweden. I brought a little bit of glamour into the lush beech forest and it has come together in a series, Walking Stillness.

The faint muted clicking of stiletto heels on the leafy ground. Then slowly conquering the rocky surface one step at the time. The faint clicking of the camera. Surrounded by silence.

In this series, I liked to portrait the stillness and tranquillity of Kjugekull. Yet, nothing is still.

The ground is moving; the ants are speeding by and the spiders are jumping from leaf to leaf. I liked to include the constant motion, like the wind in the hair and the movement of the dress.

Icehotel 2013

The ICEHOTEL is situated above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. The sun doesn’t rise at all for two weeks in winter but then again the sun shine both day and night during summer.

The ICEHOTEL is made of massive blocks of ice from Torne River and the hotel is rebuilt every year.

The design of the hotel is different every year and artists from around the world are involved in the making of the ICEHOTEL. Artists are credited below.

Reception – Unfold by Susan Christianen & Lena Kriström

I stayed at the ICEHOTEL to photograph an Australian wedding last week. The thick walls of snow inside the ICEHOTEL isolate all sound and the hotel was so quiet, turning voices into whispers. It felt serene, magical almost.

Main Hall – Navigating the Unknown by Marjolein Vonk, Marinus Vroom & Jens Thoms Ivarsson

The Icebar was one of the more popular places to hang out in the ICEHOTEL, perhaps to keep the heat up on the dancefloor, or simply hang around in the bar. Drinks were served in glasses made of ice, obviously keeping the drinks well chilled. The tunes of Fever Ray was playing. Very fitting.

Torne River

The ice church is also rebuilt every year and they many weddings and baptisms are held in the church. Still water will freeze (besides being very cold), so the water is kept in a thermos during the baptism.

There’s a story behind every ice suite, all designed by different artists. Some suits are playful, like Bedtime Story and Cold And Crazy.

I went for a walk in beautiful central Copenhagen and the quaint harbour, Nyhavn. My grandmother was Danish and I spent a lot of summer vacations in Denmark.

I like the relaxed vibe of the city. It was lovely to walk around in the sunshine checking locations for a shoot and to have lunch by the water.

Voice Like an Angel

I lived in Melbourne when I heard of Dear Euphoria the first time. I had been seeing a Swedish musician and he went on and on about the band. I downloaded the songs and was completely blown away.

I remember that I had an assignment to develop 5×4 prints at RMIT and I spent 30 minutes in complete darkness in the darkroom just listening to Elina’s voice. It’s impossible not to be moved.

Dear Euphoria played in Stockholm last night and the room was completely quiet. The woman sitting next to me had tears in her eyes and I could feel mine tear up too. It’s just so beautiful, fragile and strong at the same time.

Stockholm Fashion Week – The Local Firm AW13

The Local Firm is a Swedish fashion jeans brand and the first collection was released in 2008. The Local Firm often find inspiration in the Bauhaus movement with distinct graphic lines and shapes.

The photos below are from the A/W 2013 collection, shown at Fashion Week. Lots of great details in leather, fringe and sequin. Really funky hair styling too.

The Gold Standard is a list of the best hotels, bars and restaurants around the world. It’s put together once a year by Condé Nast Traveller and the Golden Standard of 2013 is published in the February edition.

One Australian bar made the exclusive list, The Croft Institute. It’s a wonderful bar, tucked down in an alleyway in Melbourne. I love this place. It has a funky vibe and it’s simply a great place to hang out.

It was so bizarre to walk around in the freezing cold while the ground was bubbling. The hot steam from the geysers froze before it hit the ground making the area around the larger geysers pretty slippery.

Growing up in Sweden you are used to snow and you just know by a glance if the ground is slippery or not. In fact, I have never really thought about this until I saw tourists walking around with large steps on the icy snow, obviously falling laughing all over the place. Geysers and all, but that is what I remember the most.

Heart of winter and it had been snowing all night. It was early in the morning and black outside as we walked up the hill to Hallgrímskirkja. It was only a short walk but the strong winds made the walk painfully cold.

I got some quick shots and we hurried through the storm to the massive doors to get inside. Only to find the doors locked. Luckily, we found a smaller entrance. The interior looks like a Viking ship turned upside down. It’s all white with glass sculptures looking like frozen water.

Beach House

Finished 3 days of shooting, in 3 different cities and a quick trip to Copenhagen. The editing work is quickly piling up, but I have escaped to the beach house for a few days. So I’m plugging in the laptop and working to the salty breeze from the ocean and the sound of seagulls. Life is good.

Stockholm Photography Week

Stockholm Photography Week has just ended and I did a 3-day master class workshop with Anders Petersen. I love the rawness of his pictures, yet they remain human, sympathetic to the subject.

It’s been intense and inspiring days and Petersen was generous in sharing his experiences and to give feedback. He gave us a couple of assignments to shoot and present the following day and below are my photos.

I was fortunate to get folio reviews from amazing art photographer Jacob Felländer and street photographer Eric Kim. Their work may be different but their feedback was similar and much appreciated.

The Final Countdown

It is hard to tell, but this abandoned event park was the place to be in the 80’s. With several indoor and outdoor discos and a large outdoor stage with all the cool Swedish acts at the time, Europe, Magnus Uggla, Orup and my all favourite (at the time) Lily & Susie.

This place was on fire and usually sold out immediately and all the accommodations and temporary youth camping were filled up in no time. Funny enough the park was located in a kind of posh area by the sea and my family home was only a short walk away. Once my parents let some kids put up a tent in our garden over night. Another time we were having a family barbecue and cars with drunken kids in the trunk drove by. It was wild; it was the neon coloured 80’s.

The music was pumping loud into the summer nights, a lot of the neighbours would complain but I remember falling asleep as a kid to the comforting beats, screaming kids in roller coaster and singing teenagers on their way to the disco.

As I grew older, my friends and I would walk to the park during the sound checks at day, and I probably still have autographs lying around at the attic. When I was in my teens, the former glory of the park had started to fade but we spent a lot of summer nights looking at live bands, dancing the nights away at the outdoor disco. It was the place of the first drinks; the first kisses with boys; there are many memories.

The place is abandoned now, the main stage is gone, the roller coaster is long gone and the buildings that remain are slowly falling apart, a sense of sadness, passing of time. It’s the final countdown.

It was snowstorm when we arrived in Reykjavik and the waves were crushing hard against the black lava shores. No whale watcher boats left the harbour for a few days due to the snowstorm, but finally they did.

Only a handful of people were on the boat, all of them Scandinavians brave enough, or perhaps foolish enough, to go on a boat trip in the Arctic during winter. It was not warm, but it was stunningly beautiful.

We were only 20 minutes from the harbour when the guide spotted a humpback whale. I did not. From a distance it takes a trained eye to see them, but as we got closer so did I.

It is not unusual to see whales around Reykjavik during winter, but quite often you spot them and then they swim off. This humpback whale however stayed with us; it started to play, splashed his tail against the surface.

As we turned back towards the harbour a group of Orca whales (killer whales) came close to the boat, swimming next to us. It is extremely unusual that Orcas go near Reykjavik and our guide told us that she had only seen it happen twice before.

The humpback whales move slowly, sliding through the water; the Orcas are all about speed and power. They live and hunt in groups, circling the pray before they strike and that’s what we saw. On the second photo there are baby Orcas too.

The photos don’t make the whales justice, the graceful swimming through the water; the breathing sounds; their impressive length and strength, only sense it. Just like the traces they leave behind them in the water after a dive, like a quiet fingerprint on the water.

The Croft Institute

The best bars in Melbourne are hidden in the many lane ways, usually without any signs at all. Croft Institute may be one of the trickiest bars to find, located at the end of a narrow alleyway, yet it’s always packed.

The famous laboratory bar is located on the ground floor, travel up the stairs to the top floor and you find a second bar and the dance floor. The top floor has a different design, more of a gymnastic theme. And a grass covered bar.

The Horse Whisperer

I hadn’t been horse riding since I was a kid, but you can’t visit Iceland and not go horse riding. So off we went.

I was perhaps slightly optimistic when I put on my camera thinking I would get some nice photos from the excursion. The landscape was stunningly beautiful with frozen lakes and snow covered hills and heaths, but the paths were slippery.

The five gaits were new to me and I can’t really say I had much control of the speed. It didn’t feel like an option at the time to give the horse free reins and photograph. I believe I looked slightly less graceful than our young guide, who told me she was a horse whisperer. Yet another thing to love about Iceland, the stories, the magic.

Blue Lagoon

I absolutely loved this place and the contrast between the rolling snowy mountains and the smoking hot water. The photos are taken at the Blue Lagoon, 30 minutes from Reykjavik, Iceland. It’s a geothermal spa with massive outdoor pools and fabulous SPA treatments. I would go back any day.

Singer-songwriter Ingela released her new album, Image of You at Strand last week. It was a great gig and the video to Flickering Lights was screened.

We had been to an album launch and waited on the subway in the middle of the night. The traffic was slow and we ended up taking a few photos.

Emil Lundgren and Sven Johansson form the band Koko and their first album will be released shortly. I’m sure you will hear a lot more about them. Good stuff.

Eleanor Coppola

I saw Circle of Memory, an installation by Eleanor Coppola last summer. It’s an installation of grief, but as you always find when you come close to death and loss, you also find love and hope.

Circle of Memory was a quiet installation that gave room for silence and reflection, yet very powerful in its form. Visitors had left hundreds of notes, declarations of love, casually stuck to the walls of straw. An overwhelming declaration of love which was deeply moving.

Eleanor Coppola returned to Stockholm to give a speech at the International Women’s Day yesterday. I had expected her to talk about Circle of Memory. Instead she talked about finding her creative voice, as a woman, as an artist. It was even better, very honest and once again, deeply moving.

Ingela – Image of You

Swedish composer and singer Ingela is releasing her second album Image of You shortly. I took the album cover photo and Cecilia Sörbom Österholm did the album layout.

Ingela’s first album, All These Choices, was released in 2009. Ingela is inspired by Brazilian and African rhythms yet her music bares a Nordic melancholic sound.

It’s always rewarding photographing performers as they are used being on stage and usually enjoying being in front of camera. They know the frame and own it.

Anita was no exception. She’s an International Latin Ballroom dancer and walked into the studio with a smile and effortlessly kept on dancing, from intensive jive to emotional paso doble.

THERE IS ALWAYS A FIRST

A dear friend was diagnosed with skin cancer (malignant melanoma) in September. Anyone who has been through that knows how difficult it is, to just helplessly stand beside.

I took up life drawing again and it has become one of my favourite moments of the week, to spend a few hours in complete silence, drawing.

It has been a rough year but there are also a lot to be thankful of. The surgeons managed to rid of all the cancer and I’m so grateful.

I was recently asked to participate in a group exhibition in Stockholm. I’ve had a couple of drawings published in Australian Sketch Magazine, but I’ve never exhibited any drawings before so this is all new to me.

Life is strange sometimes.

2011 Recap

2011 is coming to an end and it’s time to sum things up.

I photographed Swedish singer-songwriter Jörgen Kjellgren in the beginning of the year while the snow still was on the ground. The album cover image is taken while Kjellgren walks across the frozen river.

Sony signed Kjellgren after releasing St Judas, and he gave me confidence to make the video to Utan Titel.

I photographed up and coming actress Juliette Reiss when I was in LA. Juliette has mostly worked on various theatre productions, but also on film sets and she is regular in the background on How I Met Your Mother and was recently on Mad Men as well as True Blood.

We went for a walk in Los Feliz; it was close to sunset and it is all ambient light. She’s so beautiful and such a delight to work with.

I am back from the US and the jet lag is… well, it is what it is. I probably should try and get some sleep, but I’m editing photos from Los Angeles.

I spent a lot of time with my dear friends Sara and Caleb (top photo). We went to Malibu, amazing dinners and Annenberg Space for Photography (loved loved loved the Beauty Culture exhibition).

It was a cold winter day when Swedish singer-songwriter Jörgen Kjellgren came to the studio. After the studio shoot, we walked to the river. The water was frozen and people were taking shortcuts over the water, creating muddy tracks between the islands.

Jörgen jumped from a low boat bridge and we got some shots, one of them is the album cover (top right) to his new album St Judas. It will be released 25th May, but here is a preview of the track Vintern (winter). And of course, some photos.

We all have dreams; the difference is what we make of them.

Australian singer-songwriter Ben Abraham wrote American singer Sara Bareilles a song, asking her to sing with him. Last week they performed together at Rod Laver Arena in front of 15 000 people.

The image is from a photo shoot I did with Ben in CBD last month; I will post more photos from that shoot in a couple of days.

I am in Melbourne for work and was lucky enough to be flown over. I did some shopping along Brunswick Street yesterday.

I photographed brother sister duo behind the fashion label Alpha 60 last year and the photo was used in a special edition for Sportsgirl Australia. Alpha 60 has a temporary sale store at Brunswick Street (final week) and I saw one of the pieces from the Sportsgirl collection. My photo was printed on the tag.

I had already moved back (my visa expired) to Sweden when the collection was in store, so it was actually the first time I saw it in print. To pick up a designer dress and see your photo… you kind of just want to do happy dance. It did put a smile on my face.

Organic Botanic

Carl-Johan Paulin, one of the photographers I’m sharing studio space with, had a gallery opening last night at Berns, Stockholm.

The show Organic Botanic includes photographs of fruits and flowers. The fruits are hand painted by artist Martin Bergström and photographed by Paulin. The exhibition will be on at Berns Asiatiska 10 March – 10 May.

I was quite serious about dancing when I was younger and pretty much lived in the studio. I still do in a way, but in the photo studio instead.

Sometimes you can combine the two. I spent three weeks following a contemporary dancer in Melbourne on a project in photojournalism. I had so much fun.

The new series is photographed in Stockholm. The dancer, Sara, is currently doing her final semester at the Royal Swedish Ballet School, already rehearsing the Swan Lake with the Royal Swedish Ballet.

I met Andreas at a fashion event in Stockholm, the venue was crowded, the music loud and it was late at night. Andreas was wearing a v-neck shirt, his tattoo showing and assumed he was a model. We did a quick test shoot.

I was working on the images when a new photo assistant came into the studio. He looked at my screen and said, “you’re doing vampire photos!”

It made me laugh, because vampires weren’t what I had in mind when I shot it, at all. But I did read the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris a couple of weeks ago and there are obviously a few vampires around.

What I love the most about my job is the variety in general and variety of people I get to meet in particular. Yesterday I photographed a ballerina; a couple of days prior I photographed a punk rock band.

It’s really just a sneak peak. The ballet images will be my entry at the APPA Awards (Australian Professional Photography Awards). The Slagsterz will release new material and the photos will be used in the press release.

My friend Liam McIntyre will be replacing Andy Whitfield in Spartacus – Blood and Sand. Liam has previously starred in HBO’s The Pacific as well as Australian TV-series Rush and Neighbours.He takes his work serious, lost 15 kilos for a previously film role and I’m sure he will do great as the new Spartacus.

2011 and it’s time for a change with a new website and photo blog.

On this site, I will keep posting my fashion shoots, portraits and all personal work. There are some new images in the galleries and of course a new blog layout.

I have moved my wedding stuff to a separate site (www.anneviweddings.com). Slightly different crowd, slightly different style, so it made sense.

I’m kind of excited; I hope you will be too.

After four years in Australia my visa expired so I moved from Australian summer to Swedish winter. Australia is fairly remote to… most places. So I did some travelling.

I had an exhibition in Los Angeles and met up with photography friends and had an amazing time there, then head over to New York for a couple of weeks.

I photographed singer songwriter Dear Euphoria and the photos were published in the book Vägen till Sångerna by Stefan Warnqvist.

Dear Euphoria and I also worked together on another project. Her voice and my images in a video that was screened at Slideluck Stockholm.

Biggest gig of the year was with fashion designers Alpha 60, for Sportsgirl Australia. It was printed on postcards and in stores all over Australia.

Had some photos in Australian Sketch Magazine.

Got a silver award at the Australian Professional Photography Awards 2010. I won three bronze awards at the International Aperture Awards 2010, in three different categories, people, wedding and illustrative.

Studio Setup

Sometimes you ask me about lighting so I thought I would share some photos.

(1) Two heads lighting the background, bouncing into the polyboards, mostly to avoid camera flare.

(2) The main light is a Beauty Dish with reflector and the second light is a Balloon. A beauty dish is probably my favourite light source, besides ambient, when it comes to portraits. It gives a beautiful fall off, eg. this shot. The balloon is completely underrated but gives an amazingly soft light. I use it a lot for beauty shots.

The combination of a beauty dish and a balloon isn’t typical I guess, but I find using just a beauty dish will be too harsh for a fashion shoot. Big soft boxes are easy and reliable, but can give a flat light. It depends on what you shoot of course.

Estelle and I used to live at the same street in Melbourne. We live only a couple of blocks apart in Stockholm.

She has modelled professional for years and had worked with photographers and make up artists I knew. But we had never met until she followed love and moved to Sweden.

Of course we had to do a shoot together when we found out. It was so much fun and she is a natural in front of the camera.

Vägen till sångerna (the road to the songs) is an anthology with interviews of contemporary Swedish singer-songwriters written by Stefan Warnqvist. A discussion about their work, influences and creative process are brought together into a book including discographies and photos.

Dungen, Taken by Trees, Timo Räisänen, Elin Sigvardsson and Dear Euphoria are a few of the musicians that are interviewed. Some of my photos of Elina Johansson aka Dear Euphoria are published in the book.
